The 2nd International Neural Dynamics Summer School 2018

Experience experimental and computational neuroscience research

05/09/2018 –07/09/2018 Bristol University, UK

We are offering twelve fully funded positions on the Wellcome Trust sponsored
summer school for training and research experience in neural dynamics (TRENDs).

The training and research in neural dynamics summer school is an exciting
Wellcome Trust funded course held at the University of Bristol. The aim is to
introduce young scientists to experimental and computational techniques used in
neuroscience research. The summer school will be a three-day course made up of
a series of seminars and lab visits where successful candidates will get first
hand experience of electrophysiological recordings (both in vitro and in vivo),
EEG recordings, brain imaging, optogenetics, data analysis workshops and
practical classes on learning to code in Python. No prior experience is
necessary, but a keen interest is essential!

We welcome applications from science undergraduates from a wide range of

For successful applicants all costs to attend the course, including travel
expenses within the UK, accommodation and food will be covered. Overseas travel
expenses will be considered on a case by case basis.

Deadline 15 June, 2018

Please send a completed application form, along with a cover letter, a copy of
your CV and one academic reference or the name of one referee to

The application form is available as .doc ( TRENDS_2018_docx (Office document,
9kB)) or as a LaTeX template (TRENDS_2018_tex), please submit either .doc or

subject: PhD position in speciation dynamics, Umeå University, Sweden

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå University, Sweden
opens a PhD student position for studies on ecological speciation and species
boundary dynamics in plants. The position will start on September 1 or
according to agreement. The last day for application is June 25, 2018.

This project investigates the genomics of ecological selection and adaptation,
and how genetic factors interact with ecology to facilitate speciation. The
project is broadly defined and represents an opportunity to work at the
intersection of theoretical ecology and population genetics, both conceptually
and empirically.

We are looking for a candidate with an academic background in either ecology or
evolution or relevant quantitative subjects (e.g., computer science, physics
and mathematics). A combination of both is particularly advantageous, as is
knowledge and experience of genetic data analyses, bioinformatics, and
theoretical/mathematical ecology. The candidate should have a keen interest in
speciation, be highly motivated, independent and collaborative, and be fluent
in both spoken and written English.

Science PhD Experience Programme 2018 for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship

– Relevant to undergraduate and master course students
– Deadline of application: 31 May 2018

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is the prestigious PhD fellowship programme in
Hong Kong. For those who have interest in the PhD positions in Hong Kong,
Science PhD Experience Programme 2018 aims to invite potential outstanding
applicants of Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme to visit our university (Hong
Kong Baptist University) and the Department of Biology and to encourage them to
apply for the fellowship. The detailed information on the fellowship can be
found from the following websites:

2. (about last-year application)

Participants can visit our Department of Biology during their 4-days stay in
Hong Kong between June and August 2018 and the date can be decided by the
participants and potential supervisors.

If you are a student who wants to participate in this programme, please refer
to the attached zip file at “Announcements” “Science
PhD Experience Programme 2018 for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship”, which includes the

PhD announcement:

We invite applications for a PhD position within the Inria project-team MONC
(Modeling in ONCology) in Bordeaux, France for a project titled Mathematical
modeling of anti-cancer immunotherapies in collaboration with biologists at
the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (Buffalo, NY, USA) and clinicians in the
Antoine Lacassagne anti-cancer center.

The PhD candidate will develop a novel model for systemic interactions between
a population of tumors and immune players. This will be based on the current
state of biological knowledge validated by confrontation with experimental data
generated in cutting-edge animal models allowing the simultaneous tracking of
tumor growth and lymphocytes recruitment. Clinical translation of the
mathematical model will be pursued once the structural models will have been
validated experimentally.

The applicant should be highly motivated to develop mathematical and
statistical methods of concrete use in cancer biology and medicine. He/she
should be fluent in either python or Matlab.

Postdocs announcement:

We are seeking two highly motivated and committed candidates for 24-months,
full-time postdoctoral positions at the SMARTc laboratory (CRCM, UMR Inserm
1068, CNRS UMR 7258) of the Aix Marseille University (AMU), Marseille, France,
tentatively starting September, 2018. The recruited persons will develop
innovative adaptive dosing strategies, using state-of-the-art computational
approaches in the field of cancer, as part of an A*MIDEX-funded project
focusing on immunotherapy.

The candidates will be requested to determine optimal modalities for combining
immune checkpoint inhibitors with radiotherapy, targeted therapy including
anti-angiogenics, plus chemotherapy in thoracic oncology. Once tested and
validated in tumor-bearing animals, model-informed designs for combinational
therapies will be tentatively transposed to early phase clinical trials in
patients with lung cancer.

The two positions are open in the collaborative, interdisciplinary, and highly
translational environment in the SMARTc unit of the Aix Marseille University
(AMU, Pr. D. Barbolosi) and the Thoracic Oncology Department of the University
Hospital of Marseille (APHM, Pr F. Barlesi). This position requires a Ph.D. in
applied mathematics, modelling in biology/medicine, or a closely related
discipline. A*MIDEX-funded salary will be competitive and commensurate with
qualifications and experience.

Contact: send your detailed CV including publication list with copies of the
most relevant ones, and the names/contact information of two
individuals/supervisors who can provide a detailed account of your
accomplishments and abilities to:

Dr Joseph Ciccolini; SMARTc Unit – AMU;
