    Mathematical Biosciences extended the deadline for submission to our article collection on Dynamic Publication Media in Mathematical Biology.

    Advances in software development are making the scientific paper obsolete. The Portable Document Format (PDF) serves as a conduit to publish research results in a static manner by imitating a “piece of paper” in an electronic form. Nowadays there are several software environments to implement mathematical and computational procedures for model building, simulation, and analysis that facilitate replication of research studies. Jupyter Notebooks, Maple Worksheets, Mathematica Notebooks, and MATLAB live scripts are example of these environments. These programs are easily adoptable and facilitate the publication of mathematical and computational research through dynamic computational notebooks combining formatted text, equations, computer algebra, and computer code.  This dynamic media allows editors, reviewers, and readers to evaluate and interact with the findings of a scientific paper.

    Dynamic publication media is also a very powerful tool for mathematical education. It provides a hands-on learning experience by keeping students engaged and eager to learn more, with motivational examples and applications that would be too difficult and time-consuming to carry out by pen and paper. It makes it easy for students to experiment on their own by using interactive learning tools that spark their interest while building their confidence.  Dynamic publication media has served as an important ally for online education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    In this article collection, we invite mathematical biology scientists and educators to present their research findings and pedagogic material using a dynamic publication medium.  Contributions will consist of a traditional PDF file accompanied by a supplementary material article made with a dynamic publication media tool. Submission portal will be open until July 31, 2021.
