Following the successful mentoring program at previous annual meetings, we are again offering a mentoring program for the benefit of junior scientists attending the 2010 Annual Meeting. The goal of this program is two-fold: * to optimize the educational and professional experience of mentees attending the conference; * to assist the mentees' socialization into the field of mathematical biology. Participants may register as a mentor or mentee or both. The deadline for applications is June 25th, 2010. Further details including how to register are available online at: http://www.smb.org/meetings/mentoring.shtml Caroline Bampfylde Chair SMB Mentoring Committee ---------------------------------------------------- From: Euromech518 Date: 2010/5/19 Subject: Biomechanics of the Eyes, 26-28 July, Imperial College London EUROMECH 518 Workshop: "Biomechanics of the Eye" 26-28 July 2010 Department of Bioengineering Imperial College London (UK). http://www.imperial.ac.uk/bioengineering/events/euromech Dear All, The Colloquium focuses on all aspects of ocular biomechanics, in particular the mechanics of the sclera, of the lens, and of the cornea, the motion of vitreous and aqueous humour, biomechanics of glaucoma, eye movements, tear film flow, biomechanics of the lamina cribrosa and optic nerve. We have postponed the deadline for registration to Friday 28st May. This is fast approaching, and we would like to invite you, your students, researchers and colleagues to register and attend. The registration form can be downloaded from the website. In addition, we are pleased to announce that the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications has granted funding to provide bursaries of £100-£200 to support those attending the conference. Preference will be given to those candidates whose work involves mathematical concepts, who express a desire to apply their work across the disciplines, who are relatively early in their careers, and who might not otherwise be able to come. If you would like to be considered then please send a description of about 300 words explaining your research and how you think you fit the criteria. Enquiries to euromech-518@imperial.ac.uk. Relevant dates: 15 / 09 / 2010: Submissions opening 18 / 10 / 2010: Paper submission deadline 01 / 11 / 2010: Poster and Demo submission deadline 15 / 11 / 2010: Communication of acceptance Following the request from last year participants for tutorial sessions and a longer workshop, we are open to organize related events in the one or two days preceding the workshop. If you are interested in presenting a tutorial, organizing an hackathon, a meetup please send a short proposal (half a page) to info@swat4ls.org by June 30th latest. SWAT4LS is a workshop that provides a venue to present and discuss benefits and limits of the adoption of Semantic Web technologies and tools in biomedical informatics and computational biology. The first edition, held in Edinburgh in November 2008, received 40 submissions, of which 13 were accepted as oral communications, and part of them included in a special issue of BMC Bioinformatics dedicated to the workshop. The second edition, held in Amsterdam in November 2009, received a total of 27 submission, and presented a more varied program with 6 full papers, 3 keynotes, 5 demos, 3 short talks, posters session and panel discussion. This edition has been evaluated unanimously well by participants and a special issue on the Journal of Biomedical Semantics dedicated to this workshop is in preparation. We hope that the next edition of SWAT4LS will provide the same open and stimulating environment that brought together researchers, both developers and users, from the various fields of Biology, Bioinformatics and Computer Science, to discuss goals, current limits and real experiences in the use of Semantic Web technologies in Life Sciences. The common principle on which various drug delivery devices are based is mass transfer of the given drug towards particular organs, in which either the mass transfer rate, or place, or both are prescribed according to certain medical protocols. Much progress has been achieved in the design and development of various controlled drug delivery systems, and many people routinely take medicine designed for controlled release. Mathematical modeling of drug delivery systems is very important since a successful model can provide a better understanding of and a quantitative description of the physical, chemical and biological processes governing the performance of the systems. On the basis of this description, better controlled drug delivery systems can be designed. The goals of the Special Issue are twofold. First, we want to attract more attention of applied mathematicians to this class of important mass transfer and control problems. Second, we want practitioners to become more aware of the mathematical results that can be useful. We anticipate that the journal issue will begin with review papers discussing the present state of the medical and biological research in the area of controlled drug delivery as well as mathematical challenges faced by modeling efforts. Several contributed papers will be included. Each paper will have an introduction that will make the paper understandable to an applied mathematician who is not an expert in drug delivery. Manuscript Submission: The deadline for submission to the Special Issue is November 30, 2010. All interested should submit a manuscript and cover letter in PDF format via SIAP's online submission site at http://siap.siam.org. Note the block labeled Special Section (just under the keywords block on your submission screen) and select "Special Issue on Mathematical Modeling of Controlled Drug Delivery" from the dropdown box. Also be sure to note in the Manuscript Comment text box at the bottom of this page and in your cover letter that your work is intended for the Special Issue. Guest editors for the Special Issue are Alexander Nepomnyashchy (nepom@techunix.technion.ac.il) at Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and Vladimir Volpert (v-volpert@northwestern.edu) at Northwestern University. Inquiries can be directed to either of the editors. Questions can also be sent to Mitch Chernoff, Publications Manager, SIAM, at chernoff@siam.org.
